Avoid Driving Through Flood-Prone Areas – Police Caution Motorists

The Ghana Police Service has advised the public to be cautious when driving after Wednesday evening’s downpour that left parts of Accra flooded.

Some areas in Accra and Tema witnessed rainfall that lasted for more than two hours, leading to heavy vehicular traffic on some major roads within the capital.

In a public notice, the Police advised the general public to stay indoors if they do not have anything to do outside, especially in the affected areas.

It added that “any emergency should be reported to the Police on 18555 or 191 for the necessary Police intervention.”

“We have deployed national, regional, divisional, and district patrol teams to monitor the flood situation and assist individuals and communities,” the Police announced.

In an interview with JoyNews, Head of Forecasting of the Meteo Agency, Joseph Tetteh Portuphy, stated that human actions including building in waterways and filth are blocking the free flow of water, thus causing the floods. The Ghana Meteorological Agency predicted earlier that more floods will hit Ghana’s major cities of Accra and Kumasi during this year’s rainy season.

Meanwhile, it urged people living in waterways and those homeless to seek shelter elsewhere.
